Making a bookcase with your own hands
Furniture — the element surrounding a person everywhere: at work, at home, in catering establishments (cafes, restaurants), in state institutions and in show business establishments. From the ergonomics and aesthetics of furniture directly depends on the labor and personal efficiency of the person, the general attitude and much more.
Functionality or ergonomics directly depends on usability, on compliance with certain technical parameters, which can be expressed in terms of - height, width, number of shelves, maximum load, the ability to change the height, width.
Aesthetics can not be expressed in numerical terms, but it is not less important component. How organically the proposed solution looks for the situation in the room, how much it corresponds to the expectations and preferences of the person, directly influences his mood, the feeling of satisfaction and harmony.
Books are one of the attributes that influence the aesthetic, intellectual, and emotional state of a person. For some, it is a status symbol, for others, part of the decor, for third — element of worship for the fourth — a way to diversify your leisure. Therefore, the literature must be stored somewhere. For any person whose needs are just above the physiological needs and security needs, the important question will be not only where but also how to place the books.
Content
The advantages of making your own hands are as follows.
- The bookcase will be made in strict accordance with the dimensions of the room, the necessary dimensions of the cabinet, and the characteristics of the furniture installed in the room.
- The product will maximally correspond to the design of the existing interior and the expectations of the owner.
- A wardrobe made by hand will be a hand made product that will allow you to be sure of the uniqueness of this product.
- Making a bookcase with your own hands will increase the self-esteem of the owner and inform the guests: "I created this cabinet myself."
The bookcase will be located in a room with certain dimensions, to which, most likely, there is already furniture, and the cabinet itself will be designed to accommodate existing or planned literature.
- Wardrobe and furniture.
They should be a single composition. If the furniture is made of MDF, then the cabinet should be made of this material to maintain a single composition.
- Design.
Bookcase and furnishings should be made in the same style. If a classic interior is formed in the room, then a Hi-Tech bookcase will look unnatural in it.
- Closet and room.
Naturally he can not be above the room. In addition, the bookcase should organically fit into the room and not interfere with moving around the room and give access to other areas and objects of the situation. An example for understanding: to place a cabinet with doors opening to the outside, near the entrance door would be a bad decision, because the doors in the open position will prevent entry or exit from the room.
- Wardrobe and books.
The number and depth of the shelves directly depend on the type of books. If the owner has real folios, the shelves must be taller and deeper. If the library is represented by standard volumes, it is more expedient to make the niches smaller.
Drawing
In drawing up the drawing, you need to pay attention to two nuances. You should use the level to check how horizontal the floor is. If this is not taken into account, it is possible that the shelves will be located at an angle to the surface. If there is a slope, it should be decided whether it is easier to level the surface of the room or take into account the slope in the structure and compensate for the base of the cabinet?
It looks like this: if the slope is 2 mm per 1 m distance, the height of the legs should compensate for this. If the cabinet is 1.5 m long, then in the direction of the slope the first leg should be 3 mm less than the second.
Pay attention to the presence of baseboards in the room. If it is, you should either take it into account again in the design, which will be associated with a large amount of work in preparing the drawing and making the design.
Tools and equipment
- Screwdriver.
- Level.
- Milling machine. Designed for the manufacture of grooves under the shelves, which gives the design a more aesthetic look. Requires a specific work skill. In the absence of those or the impossibility (inexpediency) of acquiring a milling machine, an alternative would be the fastening by means of brackets, which would simplify production, but would make the finished product less attractive.
- Drill, chisel, hammer.
- Paint brushes, fabric cloth for removing traces of varnish and stain.

- We apply the stain on a sheet of chipboard and give the sheet to dry.
- From the inside of the side parts we mill the grooves 2 cm high and 5 mm deep. The first groove is at 9 cm, then we make another 6 grooves with an interval of 25 cm between the edges of the groove.
- Apply glue into the grooves. We place the lateral part horizontally on the floor with the slots up, insert the shelves into it and insert the second lateral part from above.
- We put the product vertically. Top screws connect the upper part of the main. To give the structure stability, we additionally fasten 2 corners in the inner part.
- Behind the screws attach plate chipboard to the bookcase.
- Edge MDF. You can use screws, which is more reliable, but less attractive. You can use glue that looks more aesthetic.
