Countertop is the most vulnerable element of furniture, and its edge should be given special attention.

Types of finishes
At the moment there are several ways to make the ends of the tabletop aesthetic. For the manufacture of the edge at home fit only 2 of them:
- Pasting melamine tape. Glue applied to the tape itself simplifies the process, but the resulting edge is afraid of moisture and is unstable to mechanical stress.
Today it is the cheapest and most affordable, which is why it is very often used in furniture production.
- PVC stripe trim. It requires more costs, but the edges are more durable.

Used edges
Modern technologies allow to make various edges. However, not all are suitable for gluing at home. Melamine tapes produce a width of 19-54 mm. With a thickness of 0.2-0.4 mm, they allow to refine the edges of the table top in various shapes.

PVC strips of the same width may be slightly thicker. For pasting the ends of the table top, the edges are released with and without adhesive layer applied.
Plastic obtained by extrusion of PVC is able to withstand temperatures from minus 10 to plus 50 degrees.
Instruments
If you decide to stick the edge yourself, check the availability of tools. Prepare before starting work:
- Iron, which is necessary for pasting melamine edge;
Furniture edge at home can be glued with a conventional iron.
- The building hair dryer if use of a PVC of a strip is planned;

- Wallpaper roller or piece of felt;

In order to fix the PVC edges, you can use a clamp and a wooden bar. If possible, for processing the edge use a manual mill.
Fraser is expensive and for one-time pasting it is unprofitable to buy it.
Prepare the workplace, taking into account the space for turning the table top. And, most importantly, buy the appropriate melamine tape or PVC edge.
Pick a ribbon that matches the color of the tabletop.
Melamine tape
The cheapest and most affordable way to refine the edge. Does not require the purchase of glue and specialized tools. Everything you need can be found in any household, and the process will take several minutes.
Processed in this way, the edge looks very neat.
It should be used for finishing the inaccessible edge of the table top. In this case, do not forget about the moisture that penetrates under the edge and destroy the material.
The pasting technology looks pretty simple.
- Turn on and heat up the iron. Adjust the temperature so that the paper substrate and glue do not stick.
- Cut the tape 2 cm longer than the edge to be machined.
- Attach the melamine strip to the end of the tabletop with the side to which the glue is applied.
Therefore, at this stage it is important to align it on one edge, as in the photo.
- Heat the edge with an iron until the glue softens. It will provide traction on the face of the part.
- Roll with a roller or rub the edge along the entire length with felt.
The iron should not burn the edge, but rather melt the glue, which is applied on its reverse side.
- Allow the glue to cool.
- Remove the protruding edge. Take a steel ruler and press it to the surface of the tabletop. Form a kind of scissors, one end of which is the edge of the future table, and the second - the ruler. With short movements directed to the part, cut off excess edges and glue.
Do not use a sharp knife, it will cut the edges of the material and spoil the whole look.
- Process the edges with sandpaper, fixed on the bar.
- Remove any traces of glue with solvent.
Using a soft cloth with solvent, gently wipe the finished edge of the tabletop.
PVC strip
More progressive and aesthetically attractive way. True, for its implementation requires some skill, but having trained on the trimming, you can learn this method.
The edge, steady against attrition and moisture influence, will provide long operation of a table-top in any interior.
Sticking PVC edge, follow the sequence.
- Cut the strip of finishing material 2 cm longer than the edge to be machined.
- Warm the edge of the building with a hairdryer from the side with glue or iron from the front.
Apply an industrial dryer to the edge sticker, with a heating temperature of 250 degrees.
In case you use a material without glue base, use 88-Lux glue or equivalent.
Spread the cut strip and wait for the prescribed time. For 2-3 minutes before the end of the term cover the end of the tabletop with a thin layer of glue.
- Attach to the table top and roll the edge of the roller.
- After the glue dries, remove the protruding edge with a knife and remove the chamfer with its blunt side.
The blade of the knife should go along the plane of the part, thus, smoothly cutting off the protruding part of the edge.
- Sand the edges with sandpaper.
The edge, treated with fine-grained sandpaper, will be smooth and smooth.
Properly chosen and glued edge will give the tabletop an attractive look, and it will serve you for many years.
Such a smooth and neat edge can also be obtained independently.
