Materials for sewing
Cutting the web (future curtains), eyelets, pencil, thread, needle, eyelet tape, scissors, ruler or tape measure - a set of materials that will be needed for sewing. Also needed a sewing machine and a minimum ability to work with it.
Sewing curtains on the grommet do-it-yourself: the pros and cons
Immediately, it is worth noting that spending time on measuring, sewing, selecting the necessary materials is the main points that can be an obstacle to start sewing curtains on eyelets personally, with your own hands. However, all this is incomparable with the following points.
- The ability to select and purchase fabric of the desired size, color and quality.
- A real chance to save money, without giving the canvas for sewing with eyelets in the studio.
- The manifestation of creativity and skills, the result of which is a unique author's performance.
Note! To save time before starting the search for fasteners and fabrics for curtains (curtains) in stores, take measurements of both materials, mentally imagine their color and quality.
What is the grommets
Cringles are fasteners with a groove with which they put the curtain on the cornice. Often choose round grommets, because this form easily slides along the rod (string) of the cornice. Each circle consists of two separate parts. At the time of connection, they create holes in the fabric needed for stringing curtains on the eaves.
The main advantages of cringing fasteners, which serve as a reliable fastening both on a thick curtain and on thin tulle:
- evenly distributed waviness of folds;
- long preservation of the material in its original form;
- quick and easy opening, closing the curtains;
- laconic view, suitable for any interior.
Important! The height of the rings should be chosen 2-3mm more than the thickness of the fabric. The inner diameter must be at least 1 cm higher than the thickness of the cornice.
Grommet tape: how to sew to the curtains with your own hands
At the very beginning it is necessary to properly sew a grommet, as it is the basis for these fasteners. It makes the upper edge of the canvas more dense, so that the curtain gathers beautifully and forms wavy folds.
Note! The tape needs to be bought no wider than 8 cm. In another case, it will have to either be cut or used for smaller ones, with a diameter of no more than 4 mm, of the rings.
So, how to sew a grommet on the curtain? Detailed instructions:
- Departing 1 cm from the top edge, lay the tape with a glue part (on the wrong part of the fabric!);
- Well iron iron tape, thereby doing its sizing;
- The rest of the tape is carefully trimmed with scissors, without damaging the fabric of the curtains;
- Bending the remaining top edge onto the grommet, iron it;
- Bend the top edge already with the tape, iron and stitch along the bottom edge.
Important! You must sew a grommet on the edge, carefully tightening the fabric of the curtain at the bottom. The line should not get out on the canvas, and go strictly on the grommet tape. Therefore, it is necessary to sew carefully, slowly.
How to install eyelets on the curtains do it yourself
After sewing the grommet, the final step is to install the grommet. For this you need:
- Select grommets of the desired material and size;
- Correctly make markup for installing rings;
- Fasten the grommet tightly in the holes.
Important! To perform the markup, it is necessary to lay out the top of the curtain fabric perfectly, prepare a pencil, scissors and ruler.
Which rings are better - metal or plastic?
When choosing eyelets for future curtains, you should know that:
- metal suitable for dense, monotonous canvases;
- plastic will fit for any fabric.
It is better to give preference to plastic mounts. They are silent, not whimsical in care, do not rust and do not peel off, there are different colors and shades. Everything else plastic fasteners can snap on their own without additional equipment.
Additional Information. Choosing between matte and shiny grommets, it is preferable to give preference to the side of a matte shade. The shiny grommets quickly lose their luster due to the constant mechanical impact - the movement of the curtains on the eaves.
Marking holes and installing rings: detailed instructions
So, when the grommet is sewn, you can proceed to the most important thing - the installation of eyelets. For this you need to prepare an even number of grommets based on the marking holes on the curtain.
To make the markup you need:
- Measure the length of the fabric from one edge to another;
- Determine the desired depth of the folds;
- Determine the indent from the top edge.
Important! For light fabrics (tulle, organza, muslin), the ideal indentation from above is 4-6 cm, for dense fabrics - no more than 7 cm.
The distance between the rings, which will give the desired depth of the folds, is determined as follows.
- On both sides it is necessary to note half of the specified distance. That is, if it is decided to take 15 cm between the rings, it means that on both sides it is necessary to mark 7.5 cm.
- From one of the edges (from a given starting mark) measure the selected number of centimeters and put a new mark. After repeating the markup to the other end of the curtains.
Important! Long intervals between the rings lead to sagging of the fabric. Therefore, the distance should not exceed 22cm. The ideal distance is 15cm.
This will require the following steps.
- Measure the height of the stitched eyelet tape and divide by 2.
- At each mark with a distance to put a new label for the center.
- Take a grommet, set in the center of the resulting markup and circle it from the inside.
- From the outside at a distance of 0.5 cm to draw another ring.
- From the center of the markup make a cut and cut the fabric inside on the outer circle.
- Open the grommet, install it in the hole and snap it.
- Run steps 3-6 over the entire length of the curtain.
Features tailoring curtains with eyelets. Tailoring tips
Sewing curtains with eyelets at home, of course, is a good idea that does not take much time and effort. It is enough to follow the strict instructions given above and recommendations.
- The cut of the fabric should be at least 2 times longer than the eaves. The height of the canvas does not matter.
- Before starting to install the grommets, tuck in (1-2.5 cm) and stitch the edges of the fabric.
- The grommet must be sewn after processing the cuts of all edges of the fabric, except the top.
- If the fabric is too thick, do not need to glue the grommet.
- When attaching two identical curtains folds should be laid mirror.
It is also worth remembering that soft material keeps its shape worse than dense. Therefore, it is better to make a bend from the top edge about 5 cm, and set eyelets with a diameter of 3 to 4 cm.
