Tips for arranging furniture in the living room
In most cases, the living room furniture set is always the same: a sofa, a TV, a coffee table or a wall. But if space permits, then a standard library shelf, mini bar and even a dining area are added to the standard set.
If in a square room of medium and large sizes the arrangement of furniture in the living room is not a problem, then non-standard premises require a certain approach and knowledge of design tricks.

Plan preparation
The decision of how to arrange furniture in the living room, always begins with a clear plan. It is not necessary to perform it in a special computer program.
After all, not everyone has the skills to work with such design tools. Although it should be noted the possibilities and advantages of 3D modeling is a more realistic representation of the final result.
You can make a sketch on plain paper in a cage. In the process notes:
- height, length and width of the room at the selected scale;
- arrangement of window, doorways, niches, etc .;
- location of outlets, radiators.
Basic rules and recommendations
There are a number of universal tips on how to arrange furniture in the living room, which will help to prevent mistakes.
- All items are selected according to the dimensions of the room: for small living rooms - compact, for spacious rooms - large.
- The larger the room, the more items you can afford. For small rooms, prefer multifunctionality.
- If, in addition to the recreation area, it is planned to place a dining or sleeping area, then all areas should be as demarcated as possible. The dining table is better placed by the window, the less-lit part of the room is suitable for sleeping and relaxing.
- Do not close and obstruct the sources of natural light - window openings. Daylight must be able to get in unimpeded.
- Discard the massive walls that were common in the past century. Even in the large living room, they look obese and difficult to combine with other interior items.
- The width of the aisles is at least 60 cm.
- If the situation implies the presence of not only a sofa, but also chairs, then the distance between the objects of the soft headset should be such that vacationers can hear each other during a conversation and maintain a comfortable distance.
- The most optimal arrangement of the coffee table from the sofa is at a distance of 40-50 cm.
Where to put the sofa?
The interior of any living room is not without a sofa. You should not have this item close to the window. It is also not recommended to have it back to the entrance. This is psychologically uncomfortable.
When choosing an arrangement of furniture, you need to focus on the model of the product, which is chosen according to the parameters of the room, because shape, layout change is much more difficult.
- Classic sofa. Depending on the size, it can look good both in the hall of regular forms and non-standard ones. The spacious rooms can be located in the center of the room. In a small living room or an irregularly shaped living room, the method of placement is chosen depending on the proportions, the characteristics of the layout.
- Angular. Perfectly copes with the functions of zoning and visual division of space. In a rectangular room, its open part, directed perpendicular to the wall of smaller length, will help to create the necessary proportions. In square rooms, its most convenient location is in the corner.
- Island models. The two halves of one whole will be better located opposite each other, preferably without contact with the walls. This model is well suited for large rooms with fireplaces.
Where to put the TV?
TV still remains one of the main elements of the living room. Its location should be as comfortable as possible, namely:
- to be at eye level, i.e. height from the floor about 1.1-1.3 meters;
- to be at a distance of not less than 1.8 meters, but not more than 3 meters from the person sitting.
Unsuccessful decision - the location of the TV window. The sun's rays will interfere with viewing. It is better to choose the darkened part of the hall.
As a stand can be used stand, modern wall, a special table. In the small living room hanging version will save square meters.
Placement options
When planning the interior adhere to one of the 3 options for placement of furniture.
- Symmetric.
For the center of the room is taken any element of the situation. It can be a TV, a fireplace, a wall-stand for a home theater, etc. Furniture items are placed at the same distance from the chosen starting point.
This method is most common and successful in classic interiors. It is desirable that everything was designed in the same style, and symmetrically arranged elements had the same size and color.
The arrangement is acceptable for rooms of regular shape (square or rectangular without much difference in width and length).
- Asymmetric.
In modern styles, this option is most common. In a non-standard living room, it helps to hide flaws, it is advantageous to select some specific part, visually make the room more spacious. There are no clear rules and requirements how to arrange the furniture in the hall. The furnishings themselves can be of different sizes, eclectic. The main thing - the harmony of the final result.
- Circular.
Circular arrangement implies a choice, as in the first version, of the center (usually a coffee table or a chandelier). In this case, the interior will be placed in a circle at the same distance from each other, creating a regular round shape. Previous versions of furniture arrangement, in contrast, are easier to perform. Circular requires at the same time space and correctness of geometric forms, since leaving free corners is in itself a violation of the rules of the rational organization of a small space.
The choice of a particular method of furnishing depends not only on personal preferences, but also on the characteristics of the layout.
Narrow living room
The main mistake is the location of the elements of the situation along the long wall. From this passage becomes even narrower. The most suitable way of arranging furniture in a narrow-shaped living room is asymmetrical.
The basic principles to be followed are as follows.
- Compactness. For example, you can use several small couch couches instead of cluttering up the free space with one big one. So the room will look visually more spacious.
- Less furniture and more functionality. Storage systems built into the sofa allow you to combine several functions at once and free up a significant part of the area.
- Round shapes. The usual square pieces of furniture "eat up" the area. Round tables, sofas without loss of functionality will most successfully fit into the interior.
- Use of mirrors. If you put a narrow closet with mirrored doors along a long wall, you can achieve visual lengthening.
- Consider the location of the windows. If the window is on the long side, then the built-in wardrobe, mounted to an adjacent wall, will even out a proportion.
Rectangular living room
Arrangement of furniture in a rectangular living room - the task is easier in comparison with the previous version of the layout. But it is recommended to follow certain rules to create a harmonious atmosphere.
One of the most successful ideas in this situation is clear zoning. With a certain arrangement, you can divide a room into two functional areas: for example, the dining room and the rest area. Visual division into two small squares compensates for disproportionality. Using this technique, you simultaneously create two central points with a circular arrangement.
Unlike a too narrow living room, in a rectangular room it is possible, and sometimes even need to have objects perpendicular. This may be a corner sofa, for example, or an elongated desk.
As with most non-standard spaces, asymmetric furnishing is the most successful solution.
Custom living rooms
Recently, more and more often in new buildings you can find polygonal rooms, living rooms in the form of a trapezoid. On the one hand, this layout looks creative and unusual, and on the other, it makes it difficult to decide how to arrange furniture in a hall of this unusual shape.
The main difficulty with non-standard breading occurs when searching for elements of the situation. You need to be prepared for the fact that some items will have to do under the order.
In modern styles to beat such a flaw is quite possible, turning the minus rather into the original feature of the living room. Ideas for the successful arrangement of furniture can be several.
- Wrong, beveled corner can be made the central place and the main focus in the room, and arrange furniture around it.
- If the basic elements of the interior are of unusual design, then this will only emphasize the main idea. Repetition of the shape of the room in the forms of furniture will allow to establish a balance in perception.
- With the help of an irregularly shaped cabinet, for example, it is possible to achieve not only the strengthening of the asymmetry effect, but also the opposite — smoothing the wrong angles. For example, a built-in closet, custom-made, will have a trapezoidal space inside that is not so significant for the performance of its functions. But it will be possible to cover the bevelled corner and make the room as a whole more comfortable and pleasant for perception. Such an idea cannot be realized only in the case of a certain window arrangement: the source of natural lighting cannot be blocked.
