The beginning of the restoration
There is only one desire to make a unique thing in a trendy vintage style. Grandma's buffet or sideboard can get a second life only with the application of sufficient effort. Before starting work you need to prepare everything you need.
First you should find out everything about the restoration of the selected piece of furniture and decide on the restoration technique and subsequent decoration, because it will not be enough to simply paint the old sideboard.
Necessary tools for the restoration of old furniture
- Sandpaper and thinner
Any old piece of furniture in the first place covered with a factory layer of paint and varnish, it is possible that earlier it was also tried to change or restore. Therefore, it is necessary to rid the buffet of any old coating. Large emery paper is needed for grinding and cleaning all surfaces. It is easy to spoil the wood by simply trying to tear off the upper layers of sandpaper, which is why a solvent is needed, acetone is ideal. It is applied with a brush over the entire surface, special attention should be paid to carved parts. Another way is to soak a cloth or cloth by covering the sideboard for a few minutes. The layer of the old coating will disappear on its own, the buffet can be cleaned with a simple rag.
- Instruments
It is better to process furniture in a disassembled state, therefore many tools will be needed. It is possible that the buffet will require only cosmetic repairs. But sometimes you may need to twist the loosened doors or fix the legs. You need to have on hand a set of screwdrivers and keys, a hammer and so on.
- Fittings
Updating the buffet will entail the installation of new hardware - handles, fixtures, etc. All this can be easily found in specialized stores or made to order in the workshops.
- Additional materials: wax and putty to remove irregularities; primer for surface treatment.
- Brushes, sponges and rollers for coloring.
- Paints and varnishes (acrylic and oil paints, varnish, stain).
- Masking tape, PVA glue.
The doors of the old buffet are often glazed, so you will need scotch to protect them from paint. And the glue will be needed if the furniture has already begun to delaminate.
Recovery Technique
Restoration begins with cleaning the surface and restoring problem areas. Before starting work, the furniture is disassembled: all accessories are removed, shelves and glass are removed (if it is removable). If you remove the glass does not come out, it is closed with tape or paper. In general, there are no special rules or ways to restore old furniture.
- Deep restoration
The next step is cleaning the old coating. It is better to do the cleaning outside - dust, dried paint and pieces of varnish will be difficult to remove in the future. After cleaning, wash the cabinet thoroughly, degreasing the surface.
The sideboard should be inspected for irregularities or delaminations, and then proceed to puttying the cracks and subsequent grinding. If necessary, additional parts are restored - handles, legs, or chipped edges. Most often use other similar furniture, or cut out of wood. Following is priming. Only after all the repair and preparatory work can start painting.
It is better to paint from the main surfaces, and then move on to the elements of decor (crown or carved sides). The paint is applied in two layers, but for the simple aging of the wood it will be enough to have one thin layer.
- Dressing
Decorate the updated surface in the style of decoupage - this is the easiest way. To do this, napkins or fabric are selected with a pattern matching the idea. Figure cut and pasted on the side of the buffet. This simple way you can get vintage furniture with the original pattern.
Painting is also used. Thin brushes and multi-colored color schemes are selected for it. The ornament is either looming or encircled by a stencil.
The finishing touch of decoration is lacquer. It is applied in two layers after the glue or paint has completely dried, depending on the chosen method of decoration. After the finished work, you can start the assembly.
Care for refurbished furniture
Restoration of the old sideboard has minor flaws, which, however, are no different from caring for new furniture. The surface should be carefully cleaned when contaminated, ideally with clean water and a soft cloth, so the pantry will not be scratched.
It is not recommended to put the old restored furniture in places of high humidity or heat. Next to the stove in the kitchen, near the radiator or even near the window - the condition of the paint can quickly deteriorate. Also, do not leave the buffet on the veranda.
The restoration of the buffet with the hands begins with the inspection and repair, after which you can begin to decorate the surface. Thus, you can give the old sideboard a completely new life and update your home interior.
