The benefits of decorating furniture with their own hands
Independent improvement and restoration of furniture in the home has several advantages:
- You can choose the most suitable decor that meets the requirements of beauty;
- the purchase of materials is much cheaper;
- there are no restrictions in terms of performance of work;
- savings on the acquisition of new furniture.
Determine the design
Restoration of old furniture will inevitably entail a change in the design of the room, and here it is impossible “just like that” to introduce new forms into the well-established interior of the apartment, an unusual decoration of furniture that will break out of general harmony. It is worth noting that there are design techniques that allow you to "fit" the product of another decor in the overall picture of the room.
Before you start decorating, you need to decide on the design and elements of its update. To do this, you can use:
- decoupage;
- Glisal;
- fabric, including tulle;
- painting;
- artificial aging using craquelure;
- stencils;
- mosaic;
- self-adhesive film;
- other methods.
Each of them has its own merits, but what to choose is decided by the home master.
Decoupage old furniture
One of the most interesting decoration options is decoupage. It gives the opportunity to decorate household items with various images, photographs, drawings. But most often for this purpose use special decoupage napkins.
The decoupage technique is not complicated, but it requires attention and accuracy, however, like any other work. To decorate a product with its use you need:
- free the furniture surface from varnish, old paint, drawings, glued pictures;
- clean it to a perfectly smooth state;
- primed with acrylic paint;
- dry completely;
- then apply PVA glue to the surface;
- carefully place the napkin or other material selected for decoration;
- to make the furniture shine, the decoupage image and the rest of the surface can be varnished;
- dry completely.
Restoration of the cabinet using wallpaper
Many people find it unacceptable to decorate old furniture with wallpaper, but this is not true. Today, the market offers the broadest selection of these products, made in different colors and different textures, provides an opportunity for a flight of fancy for decorating furniture with your own hands. Wallpaper can update any piece of furniture, depending on this, use a different material and pattern. But the most impressive are the cabinets, a large surface of which can be decorated with wallpaper with a spectacular bright pattern.
Surface decor with luster
When decorating, some consider the coating of products with translucent paint, which is called glizalia, glaze, or azure. It can be used to decorate any surface, including furniture, regardless of whether it is made of wood or glass is used in its design.
It is easy to "lay down" on the material, it does not smell, but it differs in many color shades. It can be applied with a roller, brush or sponge, like regular paint. The use of paint is as follows:
- you must first treat the surface: clean, remove dirt, degrease;
- then apply a primer: on the wooden surfaces of furniture - one or two layers, on the glass - four or five layers of soil, which creates the effect of frosted glass.
Before use, glizal is diluted with water in proportion to the instruction. You can create a picture within half an hour after applying the mixture; otherwise, it will freeze, and it will be impossible to “draw”.
Facade decoration with acrylic paints
Using paint is one of the ways to decorate furniture. This is not just a “refresh”, as some express it, but an opportunity to ennoble it and breathe in new life. At the same time, you can not just paint the surface with a single-color paint, but also paint it with different patterns and apply any ornament. If the house master owns the skills of the artist, then his creative imagination will turn an ordinary wardrobe or table into a work of art.
Acrylic paints, which are absolutely harmless to health, bright and saturated, are usually used for furniture design. But you can and monochromatic paint can be used so that any piece of furniture will look elegant and impressive. To do this, you can take several colors and arrange the facade in the form of multi-colored stripes of different sizes, squares, triangles, circles, ovals - for this you do not need a lot of skill. And even if the figures are not quite geometrically accurate, they will look very fervently.
The procedure for decorating with acrylic paints using the following patterns:
- the surface of the furniture must be cleaned to a perfectly smooth state; in the presence of irregularities - to grind;
- paint and let it dry completely;
- attach the stencil and paint it in the appropriate colors;
- remove it carefully, let it dry completely;
- so that the surface of the furniture glitters, it must be varnished.
Craquelure Coating
Many home craftsmen use craquelure, which helps to achieve the effect of cracking. It is achieved as follows:
- on the paint that has not yet dried up, you must carefully apply the craquelure varnish;
- it is made from egg white or white glue; sometimes use vinegar or gelatin.
- to make the effect of cracking the brightest, paint should be applied twice;
- the second layer is applied immediately after the first one dries: then the “cracks” that appear will shine through the upper one.
Furniture decoration by aging
Aging is one of the ways to restore furniture in vintage style. If such decoration is planned, the furniture should be prepared as follows:
- sand: first with coarse sandpaper, and then - fine-grained;
- you can even completely wash off the paint on some places of the surface, which will enhance the effect of aging.
Vintage furniture does not fit into the current design of most apartments, and this should be taken into account by the home master. Therefore, it is possible to include modern design finds in its design, which will harmoniously fit it into the existing interior.
Stencils for furniture decoration
Unfortunately, not everyone can ennoble the furniture, decorating it with original drawings: not everyone can be artists - not all home craftsmen can draw, but there is no reason for sadness: you can apply drawings using ready-made or home-made stencils with various ornaments. Patterns are painted using a pattern, and you can fix them with a special varnish.
Templates can be made:
- from thin plywood, having previously put a pattern on them, and then cut it out with a jigsaw, manual or electric;
- thick paper;
- monophonic film.
In addition, you can use a self-adhesive film, which is applied drawing. It can be cut along the contour and cut around it with a pencil, and then neatly colored. The furniture painted with monochromatic paint with a white openwork ornament painted on it with the help of a stencil will look spectacular.
The order of decoration using the stencil is as follows:
- the surface of the product is cleaned; in the presence of irregularities - polished;
- all elements are stained, after which they need to dry completely;
- make a stencil, gently attach it and paint over the corresponding color or several colors;
- carefully remove the template, let the furniture dry completely;
- so that the restored product retains its appearance as long as possible, it can be varnished.
Decorating old furniture is a great chance for a home craftsman to show his creative abilities and save a family budget.
