Features
Initially, this technique was used for decorating smooth glass and ceramic products. Therefore, its use as a furniture decor has its own characteristics.
Overall, the basic principles have not changed. So, its essence consists in transferring the pattern to the surface with the help of napkins. The original uses special napkins, plain paper, or thin paper on which you can print any image you like. It is soaked a little, leaned against the glass, covered with several layers of solution (water with glue), then allowed to dry and varnished. The general principle is as follows. Now about the changes.
For any headset instead of napkins apply wallpaper. What does not suit every type, and not for any object suitable this technique.
What furniture can be decorated
There are a few rules to follow to avoid unexpected surprises in the process of making the decor. It is desirable that the furniture was:
- varnished, or polished, because the paper will fall better on a flat surface;
- even, it means that not all of the product, but only some parts, can be decorated, to form creases and empty spaces on bends;
- without damage, any chips, dents or other defects will have a negative impact on the appearance and durability of the decor.
In general, you can decorate any furniture, but not all of its parts, and it must meet the above criteria. Now it remains to choose the right material and get down to business.
What wallpaper to use
On the modern market there is a huge variety of wallpapers: paper, non-woven, textile, vinyl, self-adhesive, silk-screen, etc. But not all of them are suitable for decoupage.
The first rule - the base should be paper and easily soaked, therefore textile and silk-screen, not to mention liquid, fade into the background. The most commonly used paper, vinyl, wallpaper and self-adhesive.
You can apply both the entire canvas with the selected print and its separate part. Experimenting with small sizes, of course, easier. But if you decide to decorate the cabinet door, you will have to work hard. Before starting work we will choose a suitable type of equipment.
Kinds
There are several options for decoupage. They vary depending on the base used.
- Classical
Applies to any plane. This method relies on the original principles: the canvas is applied with a pattern, covered with water with glue, then varnish. Mainly used paper and vinyl base.
- Art
Technique does not differ from the previous one. The only difference is that in this case decoupage is part of the already existing composition, and must adapt to its laws.
- Back
It is used for glass surfaces (cabinet doors). The procedure is the same as in the original technique. In this case, the creation can not varnish.
- Decopatch
Style similar to patchwork. They have one thematic basis: for decorating, the product is pasted over with various pieces of paper in a chaotic order. The method of execution does not differ from the classical one; only the appearance and materials will differ.
- Volume
It has the impurity of the technique of "trimming" - the creation of three-dimensional paintings using paper. It is more difficult to perform, it requires a higher cost of materials, it is not suitable for every direction and product.
We will take the classic version with the use of paper wallpaper, and consider the principles of the work.
Getting down to business
Decoupage furniture wallpaper with their own hands is carried out in several stages. Each of them has its own significance, and no one can be missed.

We open varnish | Varnish for wood, brush | The dried drawing is varnished. |
Now you can take a closer look at the action plan.
Preparatory stage
At this stage, the main task is to choose the appropriate type of equipment, liked the wallpaper, prepare all the necessary materials. It is better to make a plan and write in it what is needed in the future - this will help in the process not to be distracted by the purchase of various parts, to do the work more quickly and efficiently.
It is also necessary to carry out measurements, and in accordance with the data obtained to cut off a suitable amount of material. This is best done using measuring instruments. Since the definition of the distance "by eye" can have significant errors.
Do not forget about the preparation of the surface for further work. It should be cleaned of dirt, paint residues, rubbed with sandpaper and covered with putty.Having completed these preparatory procedures, it will be easier for you to apply the image, and the decoupage will have an excellent appearance and will last longer.
The main part and the final stage
In the direction of decoupage preparatory procedures play the main role. If properly addressed to their implementation, the main part will pass quickly and easily. We have already chosen the right wallpaper, made measurements, prepared the surface. Now it's up to you.
Attach the prepared image to the decorating area and smooth them out. Do not rush to start recording. Choose the most convenient location, remove creases and bumps. Now proceed to the overlap. Pre-prepare a solution of water with glue (count approximately on the basis of the area). Ensure that the glue is completely dissolved and a homogeneous liquid forms. To do this, it is better to use warm water (but not hot!).
Now gently, with a brush, cover the entire drawing with this solution. It will be easier to work here than with napkins, as the wallpaper is denser and will not stick to the brush initially.
Apply several layers of mortar until the material softens slightly and becomes pliable. Smooth the surface with a roller.
We give the product to dry, and proceed to the final stage. Now it remains only to varnish our creation. Before this, make sure that the image is completely dry. Otherwise, the varnish will be badly applied, and later on it can form mold.
What style will emphasize
Furniture decorated in this way is suitable for a limited number of styles. Because after this treatment, it will have an aged look. Decoupage is also often used with various techniques that give the product a vintage look. So, purposely aged and shabby creations will take Provence, vintage, retro, art deco.
Provence loves antiques, natural shades, various pieces of furniture and kitchen utensils. The latter can be decorated using the proposed technology. As a picture, it is better to choose village motifs: flowers, roosters, chickens, images of the sun and herbs.

To do this, use the images of flowers, romantic silhouettes, various floral motifs. Connect the twine, burlap, white paint, and a beautiful design for the vintage style is ready.
