Principles of mattress size selection
Part of the arrangement of a comfortable bed is the search for a suitable mattress. The most important selection criterion is its size. That is, length, width and thickness. Choosing the wrong quality item can be a disappointment.
Mattress size must meet the following criteria.
- Geometrical parameters of the bed
It is desirable to maximize compliance with the dimensions of the mattress and the bed or sofa. Only then will it be possible to form a smooth, stationary surface for a peaceful rest.
- The height of the person for whom it is intended
The length of the product should be equal to the height of the user plus 15 centimeters. For children who continue to grow, the number is recommended to increase to 18-20 cm.
It is these 2 things that are decisive in the selection process.

Standard mattress sizes
Specifying the length and width of the bed; the height of the person who will sleep there, you can try to pick up a mattress of standard size. The most common standard versions are 80, 90, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200 centimeters wide and 190, 195 or 200 long.
These sizes are present in almost any specialized store, the easiest to find them.
Sometimes there are mattresses for round beds, the size of which characterizes the diameter. Standard products of this type are small (with a diameter of 200 or 210 centimeters), medium (220), large (230 or 240).
Gradation of mattresses in width: single, double, one and a half
Both standard and non-standard samples are classified in width into 3 groups.
- Single mattresses
Characterized by size from 60 to 90 cm.
- One and half sleeping mattresses
Represent a comfortable bed for one. Possess a width in the range from 95 to 135 cm.
- Double mattresses
Are invariable attribute of the marital bed. Their size ranges from 140 to 220 cm.
Gradation of mattresses in length: for children, teenagers, adults
There is a generally accepted division into categories of products of this type and length.

These include models with parameters from 120 to 160 cm.
- Teenage
Mattresses from 170 to 185 cm belong to this subgroup.
- Adults
This category is represented by the largest number of offers in sizes from 190 to 220 centimeters.
Knowing which category the necessary thing belongs to, is easier to find.

As can be seen from the table, the size of mattresses for adults vary the most. The probability that it will be possible to pick up a suitable sample from among those offered in the shopping center is quite high. With the child and adolescent segments things are more complicated.
What if you need a custom size mattress?
It happens that the standard options offered in retail chains are not suitable. In this situation, you can make a thing for the order. Its cost will be about 20 percent higher than that of a similar standard sample from the store.
Important! Product sizes should be multiples of 5 cm. That is, it is permissible to order, for example, a thing 175x175 centimeters. But 178x213 - no longer possible. This restriction is imposed by the features of the equipment used in factories.
Those who want to have a bed of irregular shape according to an individual design project go along this path. For example, hex, triangular or rhomboid. In such situations, you have to make suitable mattresses for individual order.
Another important parameter: mattress height
The height depends on the number and composition of the layers from which it is made. There are 2 fundamentally different versions on the market.
- Spring mattresses
They are a layer of springs with a thickness of 120 mm and above and below which are plates of latex material from 30 mm. That is, the height of such a mattress starts from 18 centimeters and can reach 50. However, the most common case is 20-22 cm.
- Springless mattresses
They are based on alternating layers of different fillers. Usually, for these purposes, use latex, coconut coir, polyurethane foam. The thickness of each layer is 30 mm. The minimum number of such alternating plates is 5. Thus, the height of the springless mattress starts from 15 centimeters. And it can reach 24. The base case is 16 cm.
To determine the desired thickness of the mattress, you need to figure out which type is preferable for you.
Important! In any case, the mattress must be higher than the side sides of the bed at least a few centimeters! It is considered - the higher the product, the more convenient.
When should I prefer the spring mattress?
Spring models differ in stiffness, type of springs inside. There are hard, medium and soft varieties, with ordinary or independent springs providing orthopedic effect. In other words, there are spring mattresses of almost any specificity.
When it is recommended to give preference to springless models?
However, there are a number of situations where it is necessary to abandon the springs.
- For children and teenagers
It is more beneficial for a growing spine to rest on a bed with a springless mattress.
- With a number of diseases of the musculoskeletal system
If the doctor advises to abandon the springs, of course, it is worth listening to him.
The difference between orthopedic products from ordinary
Both spring and springless orthopedic varieties support the body of the reclining, precisely repeating its contours. In combination with a relatively large stiffness, it removes the load from the spine, allowing it to fully relax while in bed.
The dimensions of mattresses of this type usually do not differ from the dimensions of non-orthopedic counterparts. Apart from the height, which more often happens more precisely in specialized, body-supporting models.
Mattress sizes for newborns
As in any other cases, the size of this product is determined by the dimensions of the bed. One must correspond to the other.
A specific feature of models for newborns is that it is preferable for them to have considerable rigidity and not to contain springs. That is, it is better to give preference to springless versions with a small thickness.
Arrangement of the bed is very important. And the choice of mattress and its size is no less important than the search for a suitable bed.
