Bed attic do-it-yourself - a choice of designs, sizes, diagrams and drawings
Our mood depends on how comfortable and cozy we feel in the apartment, and our well-being as a result. There are often cases when a young family is forced to huddle in small apartments or even a room in the parental home. At the same time, regardless of the size of the dwelling, everyone wants to have separate areas for receiving guests and for sleeping. There are cases when the family begins to grow, but with the advent of children, additional square meters do not always appear. How to place a living room and a bedroom in one room? An excellent option for this would be an attic bed.
Such a bed is not striking in a small apartment, does not interfere with the reception of guests in the same room and remains a full comfortable bed for one or two people. For the manufacture of such a structure, a frame is first made at a height approximately equal to 150-180 cm. The necessary orthopedic mattress is placed on it, and the resulting niche can be used as a working area, as a storage system or as a recreation area.
Such a custom bed can be created by hand. To do this, you need at least a little to be able to use construction tools and have a desire to design furniture. Having built such a place on its own, the problem of searching for ready-made models suitable for you is eliminated. Also homemade bed will significantly save money.
The first step in the design of furniture will be the choice of design and design of the future bed. There are three options for mounting the attic, respectively, you must choose one of them.
- The classic type of fixation is on four supports. Simply put, you need to make a bed on 4 very tall and durable legs. With this option, you can make periodic changes in the room, easily moving the structure from one wall to another.
- The design keeps on fastening to a wall and two support. This is a very reliable fixation system, however, it is not possible to move such an attic bed: you must immediately determine the place in the room and attach it to the wall.
- Ceiling mounting type - suitable for fans of original non-standard solutions. In this embodiment, the lower part of the room is freed from the support of the bed. During installation, it is necessary to verify the durability of ceilings in order to avoid possible future problems.
The simplest of the considered variants is the bed, placed on four supports. This can be either a simple design with 4 legs, or a storage system built under the bed or a work area, for example, a built-in table and shelves. The ladder can be placed from the end or from the front side of the bed.It may be vertical or inclined, which is much more convenient during operation, but will increase the occupied area of furniture.
For the construction of cots, additional boxes are often used as steps. Such a model is safer with daily use, but takes up more space. For children's loft beds, it is also advisable to use a railing on the stairs.
In determining the size of the structure should consider the following features.
- Children of preschool age are recommended to sleep 160 cm in length and 70 cm in width, the recommended construction height is about 120 cm. In this position, the parent will be able to check the child without problems, measure the temperature during the illness without raising the baby, and so on. At the bottom of such a system it is possible only to install drawers and open shelves for storing things, or use a niche for games and make a kind of tent or playhouse.
- For school-age children it is recommended to use a full-size bed with parameters 200 cm x 90 cm. The attic bed can be located at a height of up to 180 cm.
- An adult will be comfortable place size 200x140 cm, height can be adjusted from the ceiling - a person should be able to straighten up on the bed in a sitting position.
In all the listed varieties, the attic bed should be equipped with sides, at least 30 cm high.

Materials for the manufacture of loft beds
There are several options for materials needed to produce a non-standard bed.
- Wood, as the first experience, an array of pine - a relatively inexpensive material. If desired, and the possibility of more durable will be beds made of oak or beech.
- MDF, chipboard, fiberboard and so on. Can also be used a combination of wooden boards for the frame and laminated chipboard for shelves
- Metal construction - in this version, welding skills will be required, therefore it is not recommended to assemble such a product at home.
Step-by-step instructions for making a loft bed
Consider the possibility of producing beds for an adult in a narrow room up to 3 meters wide.
- On both sides of the walls must be nailed support boards, which are fastened with powerful bolts. At this stage, it is necessary to determine the height of the structure; it is necessary that there is at least 80 cm from the ceiling to the surface of the mattress. There must be enough space for a full sitting position on the bed. Considering that the boards are a reference point for the location of the bed - it is important to nail them at the same height, for this you need to use a laser or water level.
- On the boards we uniformly fasten the mounting U-shaped brackets at a distance of 50-60 cm from each other. Then with the help of them we fix the transverse boards (lags) - reinforcement for a berth.
- After it is necessary to assemble the flooring - bed frame. For this, it is optimal to use a planed tongue-and-groove board, it must be laid across the log and fastened with screws. For guaranteed durability, the screw should be at least three times as thick as the board. Pay attention to the lack of gaps between the boards.
- Making stairs. We take two identical beams and cut notches (we cut off the ends of each board at a small angle of 20-25 cm from the edge) to fasten the stairs to the bed base. Fix it to the floor and sidewall using the corners and wood glue. Next, we make markup for the steps. It is best to place them at a level of 25-30 cm from each other. Using the level mark the place of attachment of the steps. They can be screwed either with screws or on the corners. The last element will be fixing the railing on both sides for safe lifting and lowering.
- We mount the board for the bed, we recommend making the height at the level of 40 cm. Vertically we fix the timber to the bed base with the help of nails. To hide the place of attachment, we nail a board with round ends - a wide plinth. From above the formed fence we mount a figured level.
- After the design is ready all the boards should be sanded, for this you need either a grinding machine or sandpaper - a large number. Having achieved the necessary result, you need to remove the dust and process the wood by the stain. After drying, apply two layers of varnish, it is possible with a coloring component.
- Next, place the mattress of the required size and the loft bed is ready. Please note that the size of the mattress should be 4-6 cm smaller than the bed frame.
When choosing work with wooden beams, it is best to use a section of 100x100 mm. The bottom of the attic can also be made of plywood.
Required Tools
Before starting work, you should ensure the availability of the following tools and materials (for the manufacture of the sample described above).
- Wooden beams size 100x100mm - the number and size depends on the required size.
- Grooved boards - logs.
- For stairs and side rounded slats 2-3 cm thick.
- Plywood board in the manufacture of the base of plywood.

The attic bed can be constructed both according to the drawings and projects taken on the Internet, and according to your own sketches. The self-calculated drawing will provide individuality and convenience, developed exclusively for your premises, taking into account your own wishes. The bed should be not only comfortable, but also practical, which is especially important for small apartments. Placing the bed on the dais, the room acquires originality and functionality.
Thus, summing up the above, you can highlight the main advantages and disadvantages of beds-attics, made with your own hands.
