Children's bed made of wood
From the first days you want to surround the child with all the best, safe, reliable, and most importantly, one that will serve, faithfully, for many years until the baby grows up.To do this, choose, as a rule, natural materials that are not capable of laying a "mine" of future oncological diseases, thereby protecting the child from the first days.

Why is it better to do it yourself?
A cot is the first fortress of a baby. It is there that he sleeps, enjoys life, begins to explore the world, studying, everything that surrounds him.But how to be sure that the cover and materials of the children's bed are safe? Only by making it yourself.
Smart dads, whose hands are in place, are well aware — You can be sure of something only when it is tried and done independently. This is the main advantage of the product. Why is that? Let's make a little comparison.
Factory | Homemade | ||
Benefits | disadvantages | Benefits | disadvantages |
Do not waste time - go, buy or order | Not always quality material | You know what it's made of | Making laborious takes time |
No guarantee of reliability | Reliable design - I checked it myself
Coverage is not always high quality | Quality coverage - he picked
Often the surface of the product is not treated. | The surface is thoroughly cleaned - after all, the child will “crawl” over it. |
Design and construction of the crib
The comfort of the room, the way the child likes it, its convenience and the rational distribution of living space depend on the appearance of the children's bed.
We all want something original and unusual, unusual routine. But let's be realistic. Why complicate the life with the elaborate design of a children's bed in the form of a car, airplane, baby elephant or steamer, if they are difficult to make? In addition, if there is no specialized tool, such as a surface gage, a CNC milling machine, a band saw and another? By choosing this design, you can ruin all the wood without achieving the desired.
The best material for a children's bed - wood
Wood is the most preferred material, has no contraindications, is completely inert. While the particle board, fiberboard, OSB, MDF and plywood include fillers that adversely affect the body, as well as poorly tolerate mechanical action.
- Chipboard (Chipboard) - chipboard, manufactured by pressing wood chips and binding element - formaldehyde.
- Plywood - thin layers of veneer glued together with organic resins. It stratifies with time, especially under the influence of moisture.
- OSB - oriented-chipboard plate consists of various sized chips, shavings, wood waste, glued together and pressed together.
- Fiberboard - fiberboard. Made from wood fibers with the addition of chemical additives that make them stronger, moisture resistant, resistant to the effects of the fungus.
The main feature of all the listed materials that adversely affect the use is the presence of formaldehyde, a chemical compound used in medicine for disinfection.As you can see - we advise you to choose a tree. Prerequisite - well dried. Do not use raw boards, look back, do not have time: the design will disengage, the material will crack and unscrew. It is optimally if the wood has dried on the racks for three to four years, in a shaded, sheltered place from moisture.
In addition to the boards will need:
- Screws, bolts (for fastening parts);
- Metal corners (give additional rigidity to corner joints);
- Timber, slats (for a mattress stand);
- Lamels - flexible boards 15-20 mm thick, made of solid wood (oak, acacia).
Tools - reliable assistant wizard
The complexity of the work depends not only on the design of the product and materials, but also on the availability of tools. Having, in its arsenal, a real carpentry workshop, you can easily make any product. But what if there is nothing apart from the garage and the workbench? Can I get to work?
No problem! Everything that is necessary is available for any man. And we will need:
- Drill, with a set of drills for wood;
- Planer for stripping wooden blanks;
- Hacksaw for cutting;
- A set of files for grooves.
The presence of a manual milling machine will greatly facilitate the work of assembling a crib, but if it is not there, we will manage the above.
Some features of joinery
That the furniture was reliable, at its production apply special joiner's connections. In contrast to the usual nail or self-tapping, such fastenings are more resistant to loosening, they do not “crawl”, they are well resistant to mechanical damage.
Such a connection consists of a blind or through groove and a shank freely entering the groove. Fasten them with wood glue. The size of each groove and shank is selected individually, based on the thickness of the wooden blank (slats, beams, boards).
First, mark the borders of the groove or shank with a pencil. Then the hacksaw makes an incision of the required depth for the shank, drill the groove with a drill. Using chisels remove excess wood. The edges of the product line files.If there is a milling cutter - set the cutting depth and mill the necessary details. In addition, using the copy ring that comes with the machine, you can easily make the grooves of the desired size.
Making a crib do it yourself
- Determine the size of the product. It is necessary to push off from the size of the mattress on which the child will sleep. We take the standard size - 1200х600 mm.
- The lower part of the crib is determined so as not to interfere with the child climbing onto the bed. For children from 4 to 6 years is 35 cm.
- Surface treatment. It is necessary to make parts of the product, bringing them to the same size. The support frame will be a timber cut into 6 identical billets with 25 mm slots attached to fix the slats.
- Calculate the calculation of the back. For this, the width of the bed is added to the thickness of the board. If there is a railings, we make a tolerance of 25 mm, given their volume.
- Rods for the back is made from slats 20x20 mm. For fastening at the ends do spike connection.
- Putting the frame. Boards, bed bases are connected to each other with the help of shanks and grooves. For reliability, we strengthen corners, with metal corners, fastening them with bolts or screws.
- The base of the mattress is fixed with studded joints to the bed frame.
- We insert the lamellae into the prepared grooves on the basis of the mattress.
- Fastened to the frame of the side and back.
Note! All studded joints are attached using wood glue. Under its influence, the tree is not only fastened, but also swells, firmly fixing inside the groove.
Cot house - a cozy fairy tale
We all remember the unique sensation and mystery of the huts made from bedspreads. So why not pamper your baby and improve his cot by “building” his own little house for him in which to sleep so comfortably?
Namely - having made the railing a little more, previously using a hacksaw or a side saw, having cut off their tops at an angle of 75 °.We fasten the bases of the "roof" of our house to them. It is better to fasten the joint with spikes, but taking into account the complexity of such a product, self-tapping screws are also suitable, — Do not forget to glue.
Thus, the baby will receive a personal “fairy tale” made by the caring hands of the father, and a cover covered by the mother will serve as a reliable roof.
Of course, what we have described does not reflect all the subtleties of the process of making a children's bed with your own hands. While working, you will encounter many obstacles; you will have to think out more than once about the nuances. However, we hope that the instructions for the manufacture of simple furniture that can raise fatherly authority on the new bar will be useful to both the young father and the large family head.
